The 3 Funnel Stages Explained
1. Top of Funnel (TOFU) - Awareness
At the top of the funnel, the goal is to attract as many potential customers as possible by raising awareness about a problem they might have, or introducing them to something they didn’t realize they needed. This stage is not about selling; it’s about educating, entertaining, or inspiring. Your audience may not know your brand yet, so the focus is on visibility and engagement. Typical TOFU content includes blog articles, YouTube videos, social media posts, podcasts, and paid ads that answer common questions or provide value in a broader sense. You’re positioning your brand as a helpful resource, not pushing a product.
- Audience doesn’t know your brand yet
- Goal: Attract attention and create awareness
- Content is educational, entertaining, or informative
- Common formats: blogs, videos, social posts, ads
- Focus is on visibility, not selling
2. Middle of Funnel (MOFU) - Consideration
In the middle of the funnel, you’re engaging people who are already aware of their problem and are now researching different solutions. They may have encountered your brand at the TOFU stage and are considering whether you’re a good fit. Here, the content becomes more targeted and trust-building. You might offer webinars, downloadable guides, email sequences, case studies, or comparison charts. The goal is to educate prospects more deeply about your product or service and how it solves their specific needs. It’s about demonstrating expertise and beginning to build a relationship.
- Audience knows the problem and is researching solutions
- Goal: Nurture leads and build trust
- Content is more detailed and tailored
- Common formats: case studies, webinars, guides, email sequences
- Focus is on showing how your solution can help
3. Bottom of Funnel (BOFU) - Conversion
At the bottom of the funnel, your audience is ready to make a decision - they just need a final push. They’ve evaluated their options and are considering your product seriously. BOFU content is all about reducing friction, addressing objections, and prompting action. This is where you highlight testimonials, offer product demos or free trials, provide detailed pricing information, and make the case for why someone should choose you now. The messaging is much more direct and personalized, focusing on your product’s unique value and how it delivers results.
- Audience is ready to make a decision
- Goal: Convert leads into customers
- Content removes doubts and encourages action
- Common formats: demos, trials, testimonials, pricing pages
- Focus is on making the sale
